Sharing the WMG Story

by Michele Pesula Kuegler on September 10th, 2012

Last Friday night I had the good fortune to be able to speak about Wasabi Media Group as part of IM48 at their Manchester event.  I have to confess that although I was one of five speakers, and by no means the highlight of the evening, there was part of me that was nervous.  I always get butterflies before I speak in front of a crowd, which then dissipate within minutes of speaking.  However, previous to this I had never stood before a crowd and talked about how WMG came to be.

As is my norm, I did feel flutters in my stomach as my turn to speak drew near.  While I listened to all three speakers ahead of me, I definitely was less focused on the third, as I was next to take the stage.  Once on the stage, I gathered my thoughts and began to share how I have made my journey from a Criminal Justice undergrad to the CEO of an ever-growing online publishing company.  With each word, I felt my confidence strengthen and my mind relax, sharing amusing stories about the company’s development.

When my speaking was done, the audience had numerous questions.  Many were to be expected.  How have you grown your audience?  How many readers do you have each month?  However, there was one question that stumped me.  What topic that you cover are you surprised that you like?  That was the toughest question that I received all night.  The challenging part of that question is that I enjoy reading on many subjects, simply for the pleasure of learning.

As I contemplated this question, I realized that there was one publication that fit the criteria of the question:  Buzzer Eagle.  While I’m willing to watch a football game (and create interesting and tasty snacks) or a soccer match, I don’t have an overwhelming desire to be immersed in the world of sports.  That being said, I thoroughly enjoy reading both the Weekend Preview and Weekend Review at Buzzer Eagle.  Although I may not watch any of the noted events, I find the quick presentation of information keeps me informed without having to invest a great amount of time.

Stumping question aside, the evening went smoothly.  It was a pleasure to be able to speak about the fabulous growth that has occurred thanks to the hard work and dedication of the entire WMG team.  Like any journey it’s great to reflect on the high notes, learn from the mistakes, and continue to work for a terrific future.
